It's a mesmerizing, yet puzzling phenomenon: Thousands of starlings flying in tight formation, changing their flight patterns in synchronicity. The bird behavior, known as a starling murmuration, was recently captured on video in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, in the United Kingdom. Though no predator is apparent in the video, these "clouds" of starlings often form in response to predators such as hawks. Scientists are still trying to figure out the intricacies that enable these close proximity flights and sudden coordinated changes in direction.
